Summer School Update

Remember JD, our summer school student? The look on his face in his last photos were less than enthusiastic. However, JD has begun summer studies and by all accounts is doing great. We can see by these photos that he’s studying reading, writing, and arithmetic and possibly even enjoying it. Keep up the hard work, JD! Friends from around the world are cheering you on with good thoughts and well wishes.

School Daze!

Did you ever have to go to summer school? From our perspective as adults, summer school is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen learning and skills or to get ahead of the game for next school year. Right?! However, for our students, summer school feels more like work, work and well, work!

JD is one of LWB Education’s newest students. You may recall his story from our May 28th entry introducing him to LWB’s main blog readers. One of JD’s greatest needs is tutoring to help him catch up to peers in public school... which spells s-u-m-m-e-r s-c-h-o-o-l.

We had to smile at the expression on JD’s face when he posed next to all the new books and school supplies purchased for his summer tutoring sessions. "Yes, son, this is good for you," we can imagine his grandma and tutor saying. Hopefully, we will get big smiles from JD when he gets his exam papers back next school year. Stay tuned, and we will be sure to keep you posted. In the meantime, think good thoughts for JD as he plunges into some summer studies.

Alaina's Art

Please allow me to introduce you to Alaina. She is fourteen years old and deaf. For some time, Alaina spent her days at the Jingzhou Social Welfare Institute in Hubei Province because the local public school did not have an education program that fit her needs. When Love Without Boundaries opened a Believe In Me School in Alaina’s orphanage, her potential as a student was like a giant blinking neon sign: THIS YOUNG WOMAN IS INTELLIGENT AND TALENTED!

Through the generosity of two monthly sponsors, Alaina is able to attend a school for the deaf in Jingzhou. She has simply blossomed as a student and an artist. Every time our school manager reports on Alaina’s progress, he tells us how wonderful she is doing in school. It seems Alaina’s greatest challenge is that she is shy about raising her hand and letting her teachers know what she knows. However, her intelligence is clear on her test papers and academic reports.

What is amazing to see from Alaina is her prolific artwork. This is a young woman who finds happiness in creating! Her delightful, sensitive personality comes through in the subjects that she captures with pencils, crayons, and markers. We receive so many beautiful pieces of art from her that it would be a shame to keep these to ourselves.

Teacher Appreciation Day Gift

Remember that tickly feeling in your stomach when you knew that your teacher at school or Sunday school or coach on the ball field was absolutely delighted with something that you did or said? Wasn’t it just the best?

So many of us have at least one memory of an adult from our childhood that made us into the people we are today. We love reliving them when we see our children grow and blossom under the leadership of wonderful teachers in their lives. We can see that LWB teachers in China are making this kind of difference for students in our Believe In Me Schools and Mama’s Wish students. It’s obvious that teachers are vital to creating a world that we all want to live in.

Believe in Me III

Believe In Me III is Love Without Boundaries newest school in Anhui Province. BIM III has several classes including tutoring classes for orphans that attend public school, as well as Kindergarten-Prep for those students who will attend public kindergarten next fall. Two LWB volunteers visited this new school just last week. They were delighted with the students willingness to learn! Here’s what Sandy Hartman, Coordinator for the school has had to say:

“We have visited the programs and there is so much to report. First, we met a tutoring class. Those wonderful students are so excited to participate in tutoring. They literally run to class, throw down their book bags, pull out their pencil boxes, and get ready to study. It was so much fun to see the pure joy on their faces and their eagerness to study.

After visiting with the older tutored students, we joined the Kindergarten-Prep class. Like the older kids, these children clearly enjoyed participating in the class. They were very proud to recite some traditional Chinese poems and songs to us with lots of energy and spirit. Today the children were learning different pinyin and they were thrilled to display what they knew!

The Believe in Me III pre-school class was also amazingly enthusiastic. This morning we arrived during exercises and I think the youngest children were even louder than the kindergarten-prep children! They were so proud to demonstrate their exercises. The older children were also thrilled to display their drawings.

Our school monitor tells us that the children have changed so much since starting the programs. She said they cannot wait to arrive at school. These programs are definitely making a measured and positive difference in their lives! Thank you to every person who has supported this school with good thoughts and the funds to make it happen.”

School Begins!

What an exciting month it has been for our newest school, Believe In Me IV. Two teachers were hired and they were able to go to Beijing for Montessori training. They were very eager to come back to school and apply what they had learned in Beijing. They spent about a week preparing the classroom for the students, and last week they welcomed twenty-three nervous but excited children to the room. The students range in age from one to nineteen.

The first week, the children spent time familiarizing themselves with the school routine. They also learned some new songs and made some crafts. This fall, the teachers will work with the students to learn their names, talk about weather, and learn about some Chinese traditions. In November the teachers will travel to another Believe In Me school to observe how things operate there. They are both so willing to learn and try new things, and their enthusiasm is rubbing off on their students!

Team Education in China

When we signed on for a LWB Education trip to China, we didn't know the meaning of the word work! However, we quickly learned when we donned hard hats to visit a new orphanage being built in Fujian Province. We rolled up our sleeves and went right to the wheelbarrow.


What's wonderful about this particular orphanage is that space has been designated already for classrooms and a school. Our education team has had positive and productive discussions about what school for the children of this new CWI will look like. After our "hard labor" we enjoyed visiting the children in their current home with hugs, stickers and lots of cheerios. We were delighted to see almost 20 youngsters recently healed by LWB sponosed surgeries. They look great. They are healthy and so very lovable.

The orphange staff, Civil Affairs offical and mayor of the city have invited us to participate in a ceremony to celebrate the official "finishing of the roof" on the new orphanage tomorrow. The mayor and our team will be there to publically show our love and support of the children of this province who wait for loving families. We couldn't be happier with our welcome and experience in Fujian.
